Do Action Figures Really Increase in Value?
Every day I talk with lots of action figure and music memorabilia collectors. Lots of our customers on our Rock music toys site shoot us emails or ask us questions about the value of different music related toys, action figures and art. Although we don’t really do too much valuation of toys for customers, I do try to give them as much information as I have about their particular toy. One question that I get all the time is “do these toys and action figures really increase in value?”. My answer is always YES! I have seen some of the music figures and action figure box sets that we offer sell for substantially more than our retail price in a very short time. For instance, in 2007 I wrote My Chemical Romance Action Figures are Red Hot. This article describes the all-out frenzy that occurred around a set of My Chemical Romance action figures that were manufactured by Stevenson Entertainment (SEG Toys) in 2007. The collectible value of these figures shot through the roof when SEG toys manufactured a limited amount of the action figures and then went out of business. Fortunately for collectors, the popularity of My Chemical Romance was peaking at the same time! This drove the demand for these action figures through the roof!
Some other music action figures and toys that have really increased in value over the last few years include a number of Mcfarlane music figures (these are always popular and Mcfarlane always limits their production) and a number of the Knucklebonz Rock Iconz statues (Slash and the first Dimebag Darrell statue). On more example of a set of music figures where the price is sky-rocketing is the Mcfarlane Toys Beatles Cartoon action figure box set.
These are just a couple examples of music action figures that have increased in value over the past year or two, but there are lots more. Since SEG Toys is now out of business, and the amount SEG items that are available to consumers is falling, I would bet that the SEG Toys Metallica SMITI figure set will be on our list next year as one of the sky-rocketing valued toys of 2010! I also wouldn’t overlook the Notorious B.I.G. figures from Mezco Toyz. They’re getting harder and harder to find.
